Patta and chitta

Two land records that are often asked for together. Here is what they tell you and how to look yours up.

What they show

  • Patta records who holds the land. It names the holder or holders and lists the survey numbers the patta covers.
  • Chitta is the extract that goes with it. It shows the extent of the land, its classification (for example nanjai or punjai) and the survey subdivisions.

Banks, buyers and many offices ask for both. Check that the holder names, survey numbers and extent match the sale deed or the plan before you rely on a copy.

View them online

  1. Open the Tamil Nadu e-Services portal at eservices.tn.gov.in and choose the patta and chitta view.
  2. Select the district, then the taluk, then the revenue village. The revenue village name can differ from the name on a postal address.
  3. Search by survey number and subdivision, or by the patta number if you have it.
  4. Read the holder names, extent, classification and survey subdivisions. Viewing is free.
  5. Save or keep a copy so you can compare it later with any paper copy someone gives you.
Keep the survey number and subdivision from your sale deed ready. A wrong subdivision is the most common reason for a search to find nothing.

If something looks wrong

  • No record found. The survey subdivision or the revenue village is probably wrong. Check both against your deed.
  • More names than expected. A joint patta lists everyone who holds a share. All listed holders need to agree to a sale.
  • Classification does not match the plan. Ask the Village Administrative Officer to explain the entry before you go further.
  • A paper copy does not match the portal. Trust the portal record and ask the issuing office why they differ.

Where to get help in person

  • The Village Administrative Officer can explain the entries for your village.
  • An e-Sevai centre can handle applications and certified copies at the counter.
  • The Taluk office (Tahsildar) deals with disputed or frozen entries.

Fees, forms and documents for changes such as a name transfer vary, so confirm them with the Taluk office or an e-Sevai centre before you apply.
